About

A place where I can write irrelevant anecdotes that make me sound like a pretentious git.

Spurred on by the imminent release of the too-cool-for-school music poll of 2006, I’ve compiled the hottest five individual songs, albums and live acts that I enjoyed over the past 12 months.

The Hottest 5 Individual Songs of 2006 [as taken from the JJJ Hot 100 list - released in the 2006 period]
5. Sodastream – Twin Lakes.
4. Jens Lekman – Your Arms Around Me
3. The Decemberists – O Valencia!
2. Okkervil River – The President’s Dead
1. Belle & Sebastian – We Are the Sleepyheads

Notable mentions : Camera Obscura – Lloyd, I’m Ready to be Heartbroken, Gotye – Coming Back, Exploders – My Country Brain, Mountain Goats – Alibi, Dan Kelly & The Alpha Males – Babysitters of the World Unite.

Best 5 Albums I bought in 2006 (regardless of release year)
5. Jens Lekman – Oh, You’re So Silent Jens
4. Okkervil River – The Black Sheep Boy
3. Belle & Sebastian – The Life Pursuit
2. Teenage Fanclub - Four Thousand Seven Hundred And Sixty-Six Seconds
1. The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

Best 5 Live Acts of 2006.
5. Absolute Beginners – Fat Louie’s Pool Bar
4. Belle and Sebastian – Tivoli, June 2006.
3. Decoder Ring – The Zoo, ~May 2006.
2. Jens Lekman – The Troubadour, March 2006.
1. Brian Wilson – Splendour in the Grass 2006.

Worst band name – The Good, The Bad and the Queen
Most overplayed band on radio – The Grates
Most overrated band/artist – Hilltop Hoods
Worst Live Act – Kanye West
Most disappointing album- The Frames - The Cost

I used to listen to the radio quite a bit in my car. However, since I purchased a whizz-bang new mp3 car stereo, the radio has pretty much got the arse. Now I’m the DJ.

Generally, I consider 2006 to have been a pretty crummy year for new releases. I did manage to see quite a few local Brisbane bands, and one that I’d like to highlight is The Bell Divers. Other local bands of note that I managed to have a geeze at include: Absolute Beginners and The Zebras. You should take the opportunity to catch these groups at some stage.
