A place where I can write irrelevant anecdotes that make me sound like a pretentious git.

The Brisbane Times reports that the new Australian citizenship test has been implemented, and people have begun to undertake the test in the hope of becoming citizens. The questions focus on Australia’s culture and history.

But I wonder, does the test reveal the darker side of Australia’s history and culture?

Perhaps by including a few of the following example questions, we can educate, or at least humour, our newest bunch of citizens with a more complete view of Australian history and culture.

  • Which Aboriginal tribe were massacred by white settlers at Battle Creek in 1883?
  • Which Governor-General dismissed Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1975?
  • Between what years did the White Australia Policy operate?
  • The removal of aboriginal children from their families throughout a period ranging from 1869 until 1959, is generally referred by what term?
  • Which federal minister suggested that Aboriginals be employed to shoot wild camels in the Australia outback as an alternative to petrol sniffing?

ahhh bah humbug.
