Hrm, the original meaning of the word Colossus is defined as an ‘exceptionally large statue’, i.e the coloussus of Rhodes.
Perhaps the NZ PM meant Sir Hillary was in fact a computer?
Wikipedia describes a Colossus as,
“The Colossus machines were electronic computing devices used by British codebreakers to read encrypted German messages during World War II. These were the world’s first programmable (if not fully) digital electronic computing devices.”
I know, it is silly, but I couldn’t resist.
