If man was not to pursue his own interest then he shall fall into want and be rejected by society. If he should pursue his own pecuniary interests (and gain wealth), even by violation of justice and benevolence, he is respected. Thus we are continually impelled by the highest rewards and the severest penalties to exercise the selfish rather than virtuous faculties.
