Regent demolition contractors destroy The Regent’s grotesque
My love-hate relationship with Brisbane exemplified by the City’s hatred of it’s own history.
Why does Brisbane not cherish it’s own history? Development consistently trounces heritage in this city, and the relatively recent approval to destroy the Regent Theatre in Queen Street is representative of this terrible trend.

Today, we’re greeted with this article in the Brisbane Times which reveals that the contractors deliberately destroyed the grotesque from the Elizabeth Street facade of the theatre, despite being contractually obliged to protect it. Now, it’s gone.
Why no regulatory authorities were present to supervise the demolition is a mystery, and, quite frankly, a failure of government. We apparently have a Queensland Heritage Council, which seems to be nothing more than a rubber-stamp factory for developers.
First Cloudland, then Festival Hall, now The Regent.
It’s probably sitting in some fat-cat contractor’s house just above fireplace next to a painting framed in floorboards from Cloudland.
Ha, most likely. The quotes from the PR agency are amazing though. No hint of remorse at all!
